Flavoured Coffee, Simply Explained

Flavoured coffee is one of the most misunderstood categories in coffee.

Some people assume it is sweetened. Others believe it is artificial in a negative sense, or that it is designed to hide bad coffee. In reality, properly made flavoured coffee is none of those things.

This article explains what flavoured coffee actually is, how ours is made, how it should be brewed, and what you should realistically expect from it.

What Is Flavoured Coffee?

Flavoured coffee is real roasted coffee that has been infused with flavour after roasting.

The coffee itself is brewed exactly the same way as any other coffee. The flavour is already on the bean before it ever reaches your grinder. It is not added in the cup, and it is not a syrup or a sweetened drink.

When done properly, flavoured coffee still tastes like coffee first, with an added aroma and flavour profile layered on top.

How Our Flavoured Coffee Is Made

Flavoured coffee is made after roasting, not before.

Once the coffee has been roasted and cooled, a carefully measured flavouring is applied to the beans and gently mixed to ensure even coverage. The coffee is then rested so the flavour can stabilise and properly infuse before packing.

Our flavoured coffees use a sugar-free flavouring system, made from a blend of natural and artificial flavour compounds suspended in propylene glycol (PG). PG is a food-grade carrier widely used in flavour extracts because it disperses flavour evenly, remains stable, and does not add sweetness.

No sugar, syrups, or sweeteners are added to the coffee itself.

Sugar-Free, Allergen-Free, Vegan

Because our flavouring system contains no real food ingredients, the resulting coffee is:

  • Sugar-free
  • Allergen-free
  • Vegan / Vegetarian

This includes flavours described as nutty, such as hazelnut or almond. These flavours do not contain actual nuts. The flavour comes from aroma compounds, not nut products.

This makes flavoured coffee suitable for people avoiding sugar or managing food allergies, without introducing hidden ingredients.

Natural vs Artificial Flavourings Explained

Flavoured coffee does not involve soaking beans in real vanilla pods, nuts, or chocolate.

Natural flavour compounds are derived from real sources. Artificial or nature-identical compounds are created to replicate specific aromas with precision and consistency. Both are widely used in food and beverage production.

Using flavour compounds rather than real ingredients allows flavour to be delivered cleanly, consistently, and safely, without adding sugar, oils, or allergens to the coffee.

What matters is not the label, but that the flavourings are food-grade, used correctly, and designed specifically for coffee.

Freshly Roasted and Flavoured to Order

All of our flavoured coffees are roasted and flavoured fresh to order.

Because of this, flavoured coffees take slightly longer to dispatch than standard coffees:

  • Whole bean orders require an additional 24 hours
  • Ground coffee orders require an additional 48 hours

This is not a delay. It is part of the process.

After flavouring, the coffee must rest to allow the flavour to fully infuse into the beans. For the best possible result, flavoured coffee should be allowed up to 48 hours from flavouring before brewing.

Rushing this step results in weaker, uneven flavour. We do not ship it early.

How Flavoured Coffee Is Meant to Taste

Flavoured coffee relies heavily on aroma.

It will usually smell stronger than it tastes. This is intentional. The flavour should be noticeable on the aroma and first sip, then settle into a normal coffee finish.

Flavoured coffee is not sweet by default. Because it contains no sugar or sweeteners, it will not taste like a dessert unless sweetness is added.

Brewing Flavoured Coffee Correctly

To achieve the intended flavour profile, milk and sugar or another sweetener are required.

Without milk or sweetness, the flavour may taste muted, thin, or unbalanced. This is not a fault. It is how flavoured coffee is designed to work.

Flavoured coffee performs best with:

  • Milk-based drinks
  • Added sugar, honey, or sweeteners
  • Filter, cafetière, or bean-to-cup brewing

Espresso can work, but flavour is often less pronounced under high pressure.

Flavoured beans can leave aroma residue in grinders. If you switch frequently between flavoured and non-flavoured coffees using the same grinder, some flavour carryover is normal.

Available Options

Our flavoured coffees are available:

  • As regular coffee or decaf
  • As whole beans or ground

This allows you to choose how you brew and how much caffeine you want, without changing flavour preference.

Who Flavoured Coffee Is For

Flavoured coffee is for people who prioritise enjoyment and familiarity.

It suits:

  • Coffee drinkers who enjoy milk and sugar
  • People avoiding flavoured syrups
  • Those who want variety without sweetness baked in
  • Anyone who prefers aromatic, approachable coffee

It is not designed for black coffee purists or technical tasting sessions. It is designed to be enjoyed as intended.

When you buy flavoured coffee, you are buying real coffee that has been deliberately designed to be aromatic, comforting, and easy to drink.

It is:
