Description

Origin: Kenya AA Blue Mountain
Region Mount Kenya Region
Process: Washed
Altitude: 1500-2000m
Harvest: Oct-Dec
Flavour notes: Blackcurrant, Delicate, Citrus
SCA score: N/A
Varietal: Arabica

From the high-altitude farms in Kenya, perched at 2,000 meters, comes a coffee crafted through a washed process that reveals indulgent notes of blackcurrant, delicate, citrus.

This Kenya AA Blue Mountain style coffee comes from the high slopes surrounding Mount Kenya, one of the most respected coffee growing regions in the world. Grown at elevations between 1,500 and 2,000 metres, the coffee benefits from cool nights, warm daytime temperatures and rich volcanic soils, conditions that slow cherry development and concentrate flavour in the bean.

Coffee farming in this region is typically carried out by smallholder farmers who deliver freshly picked cherries to local washing stations. Harvesting is done by hand, with only fully ripe cherries selected, which is critical to the clarity and brightness Kenya is known for. The wet processing method, traditional to the country, involves careful pulping, fermentation and washing using clean mountain water, followed by slow drying under close supervision. This meticulous approach is a key reason Kenyan coffees are so consistently vibrant and clean in the cup.

The AA grade represents the largest and densest beans produced, sorted by screen size and density rather than flavour alone. These bold, blue green beans are highly sought after by roasters for their even heat absorption and predictable roast development. While the term “Blue Mountain” here refers to bean appearance and style rather than Jamaican origin, it signals a premium, export focused grade with exceptional visual and physical quality.

Kenya’s coffee sector is not without challenges. Drought cycles and coffee berry disease continue to pressure yields, which helps explain why total production volumes remain limited compared to demand. Despite this, the Mount Kenya region maintains a global reputation for quality over quantity, with coffees prized for their structure, balance and distinctive acidity.

In the cup, this coffee is refined and composed rather than aggressive. Expect a fully rounded, delicate profile with the classic blackcurrant acidity that Kenyan coffees are famous for, supported by a light body and clean finish. It performs particularly well as a filter coffee, where its clarity and subtle complexity can shine, but it can also be roasted carefully for espresso to highlight its brightness and elegance.
