Meet the Man Behind the Flavour

If you’ve ever sipped one of our beautifully balanced, full-bodied coffees and wondered who’s responsible for the flavour? Wonder no more!
Meet Rubin Hormozi, our Master Roaster and the man behind every roast, blend, and bean you’ve come to love.
Rubin’s journey into coffee didn’t begin in a lab or a classroom. It began with a leap of faith, a little family pressure, and a whole lot of curiosity.
From Spain to Kent: A Roasting Origin Story
Back in 2013, Rubin joined the family business. At the time, Hormozi Coffee was importing all of its roasted beans from Spain. But shortly after Rubin came on board, the supplier raised prices so dramatically that it became clear: once the current stock ran out, their customers would no longer be able to afford their daily brew.
Faced with this challenge, the family made a bold decision to begin roasting their own coffee.
Rubin stepped up, fired up a small roaster, and quickly found himself fascinated by the science and art of it all. What began as a necessity soon sparked a deep passion. Through countless hours of experimentation, trial, and error, the first true Hormozi blends were born right here in Kent.
“There’s something magical about turning a humble bean into a moment of joy. Roasting coffee is equal parts science and soul — and I love knowing that every cup I craft might make someone’s morning just a little brighter.” — Rubin Hormozi
From Curiosity to Craft
Rubin didn’t stop at passion. He immersed himself in the world of coffee roasting, earning certifications in SCA Sensory Skills and SCA Barista Skills. But perhaps his greatest teacher has been time and the thousands of batches roasted, tasted, tweaked, and perfected since those early days.
Every blend we sell today has Rubin’s signature approach: thoughtful, meticulous, and always with flavour at the forefront.
A Favourite Creation: The New World Blend
When asked to pick a favourite from his roasting résumé, Rubin doesn’t hesitate: the New World Blend.
It’s been a customer favourite since its creation, and it holds a special place in his heart as one of the first blends that truly captured the Hormozi style: rich, smooth, and deeply satisfying.
And what’s in his cup most days?
“Usually whatever prototype blend we’ve got going,” Rubin laughs. “Otherwise, I always come back to the New World.”
What Gets Him Out of Bed in the Morning?
“Tasting new single origins and developing prototype blends,” he says, without missing a beat.
It’s no surprise. Rubin’s palate is his greatest asset, he’s always in pursuit of the next great flavour profile, the next unforgettable cup. He treats every new bean like an adventure, blending instinct with technique to uncover its fullest expression.
Pro Tips From the Roaster Himself
We couldn’t resist asking Rubin what he wishes more people knew about coffee. His answer?
Storage and grinding.
“You can give someone the best coffee in the world,” he says, “but if it’s not stored correctly or ground properly, it can end up tasting… well, not great.”
He stresses the importance of calibrating your grinder daily and storing your beans away from light, air, and moisture. (Curious how to do that? Check out our guide on coffee storage).
What’s Brewing Next?
When we asked Rubin what he’s working on now, his face lit up and not just from the usual roaster’s glow.
He shared that, after the devastating fire that destroyed the the roastery, he found unexpected inspiration. From the sorrow and chaos came a sense of renewal and from that, the beginnings of a bold new coffee.
He’s currently developing a prototype blend inspired by the experience, a blend he’s already named:
Trial by Fire.
“I wanted to create something that captures that feeling. The destruction, the resilience, and the rebirth,” he told us. “It’s still in the works, but I’m really excited about where it’s going.”
Keep an eye out. Trial by Fire might just be Rubin’s most meaningful creation yet.
So next time you’re enjoying a cup of Hormozi Coffee, whether it’s the bold kick of our House Blend or the subtle sweetness of a single origin. Know that behind the flavour is a man who’s spent years perfecting every sip.
Rubin doesn’t just roast coffee.
He lives it.
